  2. The 1998 Canadian & World Encyclopedia
  3.  
  4. Note: Further information on known problems and their possible solutions, 
  5. answers to commonly asked questions, and technical assistance is 
  6. available on the TCE+ Web site, at http://www.tceplus.com or

  9. Installation Instructions
  10. -------------------------
  11. To begin the installation process, run SETUP.EXE from the CD-ROM.
  12.  
  13. It is highly recommended that you exit all applications before
  14. installing The 1998 Canadian & World Encyclopedia. Other programs 
  15. and drivers might interfere with the installation and calibration 
  16. processes. If problems persist, try restarting Windows and 
  17. running Setup again.
  18.  
  19. For Windows 95 and Windows NT to install the Encyclopedia ONLY 
  20. use the product's installation process. DO NOT use the Add/Remove 
  21. Programs in the Control Panel.
  22.  
  23. Disk Compression
  24. ----------------
  25. If you are using a disk compression utility, the available
  26. hard disk space reported to you might not be accurate.
  27. Disk compression utilities can only estimate available hard
  28. disk space.
  29.  
  30. If the installation process is not successful, you might
  31. need to free additional hard disk space.
  32.  
  33. QuickTime for Windows Installation Problems
  34. -------------------------------------------
  35. There are several known problems you may run into while installing
  36. QuickTime for Windows.
  37.  
  38. ╗  Software applications install QuickTime for Windows differently.
  39.    The installation might fail if you are installing over a previous version
  40.    of QuickTime for Windows, or if you have played a QuickTime movie
  41.    in the current Windows session. If the installation fails, restart 
  42.    Windows and try running Setup again.
  43.  
  44. ╗  On Windows 95 and Windows NT, if you install QuickTime for Windows over
  45.    an older version you have to restart Windows after the installation is
  46.    completed.
  47.  
  48. ╗  In some cases the explicit uninstall of older versions of QuickTime 
  49.    may be required to "clean-up" your system before the installation 
  50.    of the newer version. (In the QuickTime group there should be both 
  51.    a re-install and uninstall program and in some cases, the old version 
  52.    of QuickTime must actually be re-installed before uninstall can work).

  54. Further information on installing QuickTime for Windows, and information
  55. on how to optimize video performance on your computer, can be found
  56. in the Readme file for QuickTime, called READ_QTW.WRI (for Windows 3.x) or
  57. READQT32.WRI (for Windows 95 and Windows NT). Also, see the section on
  58. slow response and poor video quality below.

  60. Internet Updater
  61. ----------------

  63. If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can download periodic
  64. updates to the Encyclopedia without leaving the program. Just choose
  65. "Get Internet Updates" from the File menu.
  66.  
  67. Potential Problems with the Internet Updater
  68. --------------------------------------------
  69.  
  70. If you are not already connected to the Internet when you choose "Get
  71. Internet Updates" from the File menu, the system will try to establish a
  72. connection for you. In some cases this may not be possible and you will
  73. receive a "Could not connect to host" message. If you receive this message,
  74. first connect to the Internet as you normally do. Then try "Get 
  75. Internet Updates" again.
  76.  
  77. If you are using Windows 3.1x, depending on your particular connection to 
  78. the Internet, you may experience difficulties getting Internet updates. 
  79. You may need to contact your Internet Service Provider to ensure that 
  80. your computer's WINSOCK is visible to the Encyclopedia.
  81.  
  82. If you are using Windows 3.1x and are running into "Insufficient Memory" 
  83. problems when extracting updated files, you should try freeing up some
  84. conventional memory. The Updater needs conventional memory in order to
  85. extract the update files.
  86.  
  87. If you are using Windows 3.1x and receive an "Error 16: Could not start 
  88. Internet Updater", you must restart Windows. Then, before starting the 
  89. Encyclopedia, manually connect to the Internet and try "Get Internet 
  90. Updates" again.
  91.  
  92. If you use an ATI graphics adapter, the picture you see on the screen 
  93. while your Encyclopedia is updating may appear distorted or corrupted. 
  94. This will not affect the proper operation of the Encyclopedia or the 
  95. updates in any way.

  97. Manual Procedure for Downloading Internet Updates
  98. -------------------------------------------------

  100. - Connect to the Internet.
  101. - Start your web browser software (for example, Netscape or Microsoft
  102.   Internet Explorer).
  103. - Go to the Encyclopedia's URL. It must be typed exactly as it appears 
  104.   below, including all capitalization and punctuation.
  105.       ftp://encyuser:u238Heqr@tceplus.com/tceplus/transfer/UPDATES.EXE
  106. - When asked to save this file, save it into the directory where you
  107.   installed the Encyclopedia.
  108. - Once the transfer is complete, use Windows Explorer or Windows File
  109.   Manager (on Windows 3.1x) to navigate to the Encyclopedia installation
  110.   directory. Make sure the Encyclopedia is not currently running.
  111. - Double-click on UPDATES.EXE. This will extract the update files into 
  112.   the Encyclopedia directory.
  113. - Once this is complete, you can restart the Encyclopedia.

  115. For Users of Large Fonts
  116. ------------------------
  117. If you are using Windows 3.1x, Windows 95 or Windows NT with Large Fonts,
  118. some screen text may get cut off, especially in the Quiz section of the
  119. program. To fix this problem, simply change your Windows setup to use
  120. Small Fonts.

  122. In Windows 95 and Windows NT, go to the Start menu and choose Settings,
  123. then Control Panel, then Display, then Settings, and finally Font Size.
  124.  
  125. In Windows 3.1x, choose Windows Setup from the Main program group,
  126. choose Change System Settings from the Options menu, and pick Display Type.

  128. Uninstalling the Encyclopedia
  129. -----------------------------
  130. You can uninstall The 1998 Canadian & World Encyclopedia in Windows 3.1x 
  131. by double-clicking on the Uninstall icon in the Program Manager group
  132. for The 1998 Canadian & World Encyclopedia. In Windows 95, go to the Start
  133. menu and choose Settings, then Control Panel, and then double-click on 
  134. Add/Remove Programs.

  136. If you are using Windows 95, and have just uninstalled the Encyclopedia you
  137. must restart Windows before attempting to re-install the Encyclopedia.

  139. Disk Full Errors
  140. ----------------
  141. ╗  If you encounter these errors while installing The 1998 Canadian
  142.    & World Encyclopedia, try deleting unnecessary files on your hard
  143.    disk to increase available disk space.
  144.  
  145. "Read Errors" and Long Delays
  146. -----------------------------
  147. ╗  Defective CD-ROM discs are very rare.  Make sure your disc is
  148.    clean and free of scratches and fingerprints, if you experience
  149.    problems like "Can't Read from Drive" or long delays.
  150.  
  151. Slow Response and Poor Video Quality
  152. ------------------------------------
  153. The program response and video quality will vary depending on the
  154. speed of your processor, CD-ROM drive, and the amount of available
  155. RAM.
  156.  
  157. For Windows 3.x users, some steps we recommend which may improve the video
  158. playback include that:
  159.  
  160. ╗  You use the SMARTDRIVE disk caching utility and set the cache size 
  161.    for Windows at 512K bytes or smaller, if you are running MS-DOS 6.0 
  162.    or greater.
  163.  
  164. ╗  You use the /X switch to disable write-back
  165.    caching, as this can interfere with smooth data transfer from
  166.    your CD-ROM drive.
  167.  
  168. ╗  You disable CD-ROM caching by using the /U
  169.    switch.
  170.  
  171. See your DOS manual or on-line DOS help for detailed instructions
  172. on making these changes. (Type HELP SMARTDRV at the DOS prompt.)
